Vans Custom Culture 2016

Once again I have the templates for the Vans Custom Culture competition in my hot little hands. If you want to see some ways other school have interpreted the four themes Vans assigns each year you can click HERE.
If you want to see a few that have been done here at LG, scroll down.

The final designs on the shoes aren't due for a while, but I would love to have a group of you super amazing students start brainstorming now. I'll find a way to make it work for some assignment substitutions however I can, so let's talk if you are even remotely interested.

Art 4 Daily Drawing for 1/28

Ok, this will be fun.
I want you to open up to the last class period's list of brainstormed subjects and follow the below directions.

  • draw on top of the list(s) you made last class
  • draw in pencil only
  • draw an apple looking into a mirror
  • reflected in the mirror must be a pineapple
  • you must include some sort of context outside of those three objects
  • you must come at least close to filling at least one page with your initial line drawing
  • you must at least begin shading at least one of the above three mentioned objects
  • I should be able to see drawn images and text in the photo you upload to canvas today
  • you may NOT draw from photographs/images
  • set the timer on your phone for 15 min as soon as you finish reading this and don't stop drawing until the timer goes off - other than that you shouldn't be looking at your phone for images at all (or any other image source)

This isn't about perfection, it is about working. Not overthinking, just working. Go.

10,000 Strokes to a Masterpiece

I didn't write this, but I did find it interesting. It's short, but can be made longer, and is on a much newer (and cooler?) platform than this. Here you go.

Great Article, Ritualize Practice

My last year in college I decided to keep track of each hour I spent in the darkroom/studio. His was only for my photo work, mind you, and didn't even include all of the time I was out photographing, and it definitely did not include all of the time I spent in the other studios for my other classes.
And I recorded everything. Even if I just stopped by for 20 minutes after work to think about what I wanted to accomplish the next day I recorded it - even though there was no physical "art making" at the time.

What I noticed was that a) I spent a lot of time in the studio (a lot), and b) I was highly productive and full of ideas and work.

This can't be a surprise can it? No, not really.

I like THIS ARTICLE from Tony Schwartz at the Harvard Business Review quite a lot.
Especially number six.

Ritualize Practice. Read it. Write it down. It is so true and it doesn't matter if you are talking about art or water polo or riding a horse. Build that time in and create a habit.

You shouldn't have to ponder he making, just the how or what you are making.

Kind of like my old boss used to say, "Ain't nothin' to it but to get down and do it."
