Daily Sketchbook 11/7

This was published a couple of weeks ago. Hopefully you have watched the included videos ahead of time and already begun percolating some ideas in your cranial cavity.



"What I see for the future..."

That's the theme put out by Google for this year's doodle contest. First I want to get in to what they write before talking about the prizes - which I think you'll be interested in.

First, "challenge student to look at how they will make a difference in creating the world of tomorrow."

1. Have students explore the industries and technologies that are shaping our future, such as:

• transportation (driverless cars, commercial space travel)
• renewable energy (windmill power)
• technology (3D printing, artificial intelligence)

2. As students research, have them consider what things will be like in the future: How will people communicate with family and friends How will they commute to school and work? Will there be world peace and equality?

3. Ask students to select one emerging technology/trend that would change their daily lives in the future. Challenge the students to think about how they can help advance the cause through their efforts in the future.

4. Have students create a presentation sharing how they could tackle this issue and make an impact in the future.


This is a lot to take in. BEFORE I give you their template, I just want you to brainstorm. See what you might be interested in portraying by collecting ideas from everyone at your table group. Make a list (words and images) that you may use as a jumping off point.
That may be as far as you get today. This is ok.

Speaking of inspiration, they have THIS VIDEO that is pretty interesting in terms of ideation and working methods, some of which may sound familiar.

That first video is "imagine" and THIS SECOND VIDEO is called "create". I especially love this second one. You may want to watch it more than once. Just saying.

I would view this prompt as a process. You can take several (non-class) days to work on this - which I kind of suggest, and you may also use this as one of your study drawings for the month of November.


For this daily sketchbook, I have the Google template on my desk. You may begin drawing/doodling on it once you read the text, or you may end up spending most of your time watching the linked videos (and not get much done on the template. You may also begin brainstorming content and ideas in your sketchbook as notes for working on your Google design.
Because of this, there are a few options you may include for your daily sketchbook.
One might simply be a screenshot from the ipad of the video(s) as you watch them (though this is certainly the path of least resistance; one may be of you working on the template; one may be of the template next to your brainstorming on a page in your sketchbook.

There is the Downtown Doors deadline that is coming up, so if you want to be part of the submission process READ THIS and then communicate with me so that we can get a good image taken for you before the April deadline.

Senior T-Shirt Design

Seniors, this is your chance to get your ideas from head to paper to t-shirt...and have bragging rights.

Designs are due on 9/24 in room L5.
Please specify if it is a design for the front or back of the shirt, and if you have questions I do not have answers so ask someone in leadership.

Do you want to see the entire student body wearing your design? Designs for next years Cats Corner T-shirt are due may 9th in L5.  There will be an all school vote to choose the design on may 15th in L5 during tutorial!! Come and place your vote for next years t-shirt!

Museum Opening

There were shenanigans.
And people doing weird things. Although by "people" I might just mean me.

At any rate, it was a good and crowded opening at the Art Museum of Los Gatos tonight.
Franny and Sofia were represented by their families and myself and there was a lot of other really good work on display from school all over the county.

Read the previous post to see about the extra credit that is available, and check my Instagram to see a couple of funny pics. I believe the show is up until May 11th.
If I get around to it I'll post some from my phone tomorrow.

Even More Extra Credit

Tomorrow, 4/24, is the reception for the county wide exhibition that Sofia Kuta and Franny Lin had work accepted into. The reception lasts from 6-8, with awards at 7.

I would like to encourage you to attend the show not only to see their work, but to see the work made by other local high school students. I have yet to see the show and am looking forward to it.

The show is up until May 11 and if you take a selfie in front of either Franny or Sofia's art while it is on display and email it to me I will give you some extra credit for attending.
Ideally you would go tomorrow, but any day between now and the 11th with work.

Additionally, don't forget that there is a call for student art for a smaller show at the museum which closes on April 30th - next week.
If you copy me on the email you need to send the museum I will get you points for that as well - regardless of if they choose your piece or not.

There is a lot of good work from this year that you should be proud to show so do it! Now!

More Art Needed

I said I would, so here it is.

If you want to donate art to help as two different fundraisers, please see me and/or Emily Blaker for details.
They are good causes and your peers are trying to do good things, so...

For EXTRA CREDIT, if you submit something to the Jr. Art Docents/Museum Exhibition that is coming up in May, please make sure to copy me on the email.
If you do, I will get you some extra credit at some point.
Also, send them a good photograph. Get rid of misc background; take a pic straight on; etc.
You can get a decent image from your phone - and crop it there, too - or you can use the camera in class (all the art 3 and 4 students know how to use this by now).

Here is an interesting opportunity from the District Attorney's office that can pay you some cash money. Let me know if you have any details.


Greetings,

I am writing to ask you to spread the word among all high school students about a contest run by the District Attorney's Office to make a poster that raises awareness about Teen Dating Violence (please see attachment).  The contest will award a prize of $500 to the first place poster, $300 to the second place winner and $200 for third place.  In addition, the winning poster will be used in the DA's Office's October campaign for Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

The deadline for entry of the 24" x 36" posters is Friday, May 16.

Please send this information to all students, their art teachers and anyone else who might be interested in submitting a poster.

2014 Museum Showcase

A few weeks ago I received the information from the Los Gatos Museums for the show they will be having in 2014 that is open to any high school student in Santa Clara County.
Yes, this is the show that used to be the annual Los Gatos High School Art Show, which has morphed to be a juried show over the years.
I will include all of the necessary information here, but if you want to go straight to their website, you can find it here.

The Art 4 students know that this is a required assignment.
I think it will be for the Art 2 students as well, but haven't fully fleshed out how it will work yet. It won't be dealt with until second semester so I'm not that concerned.

If you are in Art 3 and want to make a killer piece for this show, I can safely say that it would be worth some extra credit for you.

Keep in mind a couple of things, such as:

• there is a due date for you to submit a pic of your piece in Feb. (the 14th I think)
• if the piece is accepted it has to be ready to hang
• if this is a canvas you work on, I have plenty of wire to put on the back
• if it is a work on paper, I haev 11x14 and 16x20 frames that might work for you, so standard sizes of paper will help - keeping me in the loop and talking with me will benefit you

Aside from the assigned (or not assigned) class piece, you can always do more. I believe you can submit up to 3 pieces per student, but again, I would direct you to the above image and/or the above link.

I will help you, but much of it will need to be done on your own outside of class.

I will also say that I strongly encourage you to make art for this. It is a good experience on many levels, it looks good on your transcript if you need it to, and it is just fun to make art and to showcase your abilities.

t-shirt design opportunity

The annual LG vs Saratoga football game is coming up and the Leadership class has asked you awesome folks for some ideas.

Here is what I know:

• the t-shirt will be black (which will be one of your colors, obviously)
• you can use up to three colors (black will be a "fourth" color)
• the designs have to be turned in by 9/18 - that is next week :(
• judging will be on 9/19
• you can write and/or draw just about anything you want
• you can draw the design out on printer paper or art paper or the computer or whatever, but simple 8.5 x 11" printer paper is more than fine (not bigger, por favor)

Did I mention everyone at the game will be wearing your design? Pretty rad.

Did I also mention that designs are due BY the 18th?

Ok, good, enough said.

Money + Monte Cristo

As I've stated in class, there is the opportunity for you to design the image for the fall play that LGHS will perform.
The play will be The Count of Monte Cristo, and below is the info you need to know.

Here is the image that Mrs. Martyn has found for you to use as inspiration.

Notice that the image of the buoy in the middle in the page is what your illustration should be similar to. It will obviously be a different image, but the "simplified" use of shape, line, value, and color are what she is interested in.
Take your ideas from the content of the play itself and remember to not over complicate this.

You can do the text, too, but that can also be done on the computer.
In terms of text, it should/will say:

(these top two lines above the image area (in the above example, this is the text above the black rectangle)

(these two lines within the "black rectangle" but above the image itself)

You do not have to include a black background as that should be determined by the way you illustrate your design.

Here is a synopsis of the book/play:
"Betrayal, obsession, and redemption provide the backdrop for this compelling adaptation of Alexandre Dumas' classic novel. While unjustly imprisoned, Edmond Dantes befriends a neighboring inmate who bequeaths him an enormous treasure. Dantes eventually escapes and returns to society disguised as the Count of Monte Cristo with plans to enact his revenge on those who betrayed him.  But as Dantes becomes increasingly consumed with his quest for vengeance, he finds himself losing his humanity and any hope of reconciling with the love of his life.

If you have any questions you can as Mrs. Martyn or myself.
I need to know by spring break if you are planning on creating an image in the above style for this.

You can, remember, benefit in two ways: first, you can get $60 from her if your design is chosen; second, you can use this image as one of your study drawings for me.
The image will be due around the first week of May.

Vans Custom Culture

It is that time of year again, and I just received our four pairs of pristine white vans shoes in the mail.

We have until the beginning of April to create and produce designs for the themes: Art, Music, Action Sports, and Local Flavor on the four pairs of shoes and then get pics of them uploaded to the internet.

If you have questions please let me know.  You can pick up shoe templates from me to sketch out your ideas and then I will go through a voting process with the students to determine who will actually paint the shoes.

Extra Credit Opportunities

I have decided that there are two upcoming opportunities for you to earn extra credit for class.
They both involve making art because, well, this is an art class.
Also because Black Ops or Mario Kart can wait. Really.

So here are the details...

#1 Los Gatos Ballet
 A dance themed drawing or painting. If you want to do something ballet themed that would be even better. If you wanted to use as a source image an image from a dancer at Los Gatos Ballet you can go to Doug Speidel's portfolio of LG Ballet dancers/dances here and check some out.
I have to know by MARCH 1ST if you are creating a piece for this, what the media is, and what the size is.
Really, I think it would be best to keep the images 16x20 or smaller.
They need to be good pieces and not just a semi-decent study drawing type pieces, just fyi. If I'm giving extra credit and you are putting it out there in public I just need you to recognize that you are helping put a "face on" the LGHS Art Department through your efforts.

The auction itself is on March 23rd, and I have to have the piece before March 22nd.
Yes, I need to know by Mar. 1st if you are doing a piece for LG Ballet, but you don't have to have the piece finished until the middle of March.



#2 Los Gatos Art Museum
For the second year in a row the LG Art Museum is hosting a county wide competition for high school students.
The theme is Art + Tech + Culture. They are asking about the effects of technology in our lives.

For example:
"Your artwork might be created using new media technologies - computer graphics, robotics, animation - the sky is the limit"
"Your observations about the impacts of technology in our lives are equally relevant, both globally and individually.  What is the impact of technology in education, here and in developing countries? What are the issues surrounding compromised privacy?"
"How has technology affected social behavior? What is the new etiquette?"

The first date you really need to be aware of is March 22nd, as that is the date you need to have a photo of your piece emailed to the museum.

I need to have proof that you are finished with this piece and have emailed it to the museum so you need to make sure that you cc me on the email. You should know my email address, but just in case you are feeling to lazy to look it up, it is:

P.S. You need to appropriately photograph your piece in order to put your best foot forward. This includes setting the correct exposure and white balance. I can help with this.

New New New Stuff

I am so happy to have worked with Ms. Pearson (of leadership and history fame) to have designs that some of the Art 2 and Art 3 students hand drew on some apparel in the student store. I will attach some pictures and details below, but a big pat on the back goes to Clair Farmer, Grace Hur, Serena Kang and Mary Stone. Way to go, you all rock!

There will be a sale on Friday, Nov. 30th at tutorial, lunch and after school in the main hall outside of the Guidance Office.
Normal hours to buy the items will be Tues and Thurs during tutorial in the student store.
If you can't make it to school feel free to send some dollars and information about what you want to school with your student to pass along to me and I will make sure you get what you want.

Why am I finally offering all of this up?
Good question and thank you for asking.

A portion of the profits from the gear the art students have designed comes back to benefit the art program, one.
Two, Ms. Pearson and her leadership students have put a lot of energy into getting some really great pieces into the store and the proceeds from those items go to help benefit the school as a whole.

Plus, I know you just want you some LG gear. All the cool kids are wearing it. Mostly.
And...the holidays are coming up and you know you know or know someone who knows someone who may or may not want something LGHS related. For real.

Note: It is very possible I mixed the prices of the last two items up. I am human, I make mistakes. But at some point the real prices will be listed on the student store website so I'm not exactly heartbroken over it.

Basically, please buy stuff from the store; please buy stuff from the art students. They work hard and are so very talented and it would make them feel amazing to have their designs desired.
Your pocketbooks make us all happy.

Also, if we're speaking of gifts, don't forget to check the Society6 shop Studio 502 has online, too. There will be some new items added within the next month, too, so keep checking back.

LG Design

A quick overview that will pertain to the advanced art students and the next project (for the student store here at school):

• Think about what article you would like to conceptualize an idea for (t-shirt, sweatshirt, hat, etc)
• generate many (MANY) sketches in your sketchbook (more than five)
• think of text/typography, theme, "wildcat", etc
• is there a "theme"
• vaguely be aware of color (aim for a 2 color design, knowing that a 3rd color is, or can be, the garment color
• you can be funny/humorous
• think about what you would like to wear yourself (while it can be funny, it needs to be a "legitimate" design)

Finished Vans

Just so everyone can see, here are the Vans that Kayla, Sophia, and Karla finished for the Custom Culture contest.
Wish them luck as the in-house voting begins at Vans next week.

Museum Juried Show

As I have been discussing with you, the Los Gatos Art Museum has done away with showing strictly local LGHS art in their space. They have been altering the scope of the exhibition over the past three years and have made vast changes for this year.

The show is now a juried high school art show around a specific theme and is open to any high school art student in Santa Clara County.
The theme is "Social Matters."
More specifically, I have been told that students are being asked
"to depict visually a social issue that affects or is important to them.”

There are some specifics that you should know about on the Social Matters site found here,
and on the FormsCentral site, here, that you should know about. 

There are calendar issues/dates that you need to be aware of that I will post on the class calendar.
(note, some of these dates are confusing to me at this point and I am seeking clarification) 

Additionally, I am requiring all of my Art 3/4's to participate in this endeavor. 
Art 1's, it is strictly extra credit - though we can work it in to your study drawings as well.  
Art 2's, well...the jury is still out :) I haven't quite figured this out as it pertains to you. We'll discuss.

Here is some of the brainstorming ideas that came out of 5th period yesterday when thinking about social issues:
contraception, drug war, self image, racism, environment/environmentalism, unemployment, religion, peer pressure, police brutality, agism, sexism, stereotyping, cancer, health care, depression, poverty, death penalty, meat industry, suicide, assisted suicide, gay marriage, stress, drunk driving, underage drinking/smoking, abortion

Obviously this is not a complete list, but it is something to get the brain waves a-workin'.

Oh, did I mention they are giving MONEY away as awards? Yes, they are. Read about it on the site.
