Daily Sketchbook 8/23

The first daily in-class prompt of the year.
Please hold your excitement.

Draw some cloth with folds. You have two options.
First option, get a mirror and draw from your own clothing.
Second option, draw from the clothing of one of your peers.

Focus on shape and form and value please.

You do not need to fill the entire page.

Please draw in pencil only.

Smile.

Daily Sketchbook 3/31

Get out your pen and ink (yes, that classic dip pen).
Get ready to use stipple only.
Get ready to NOT draw out your image ahead of time in pencil (or ink, even).
So...
working straight with ink, and from your imagination/memory, draw an image based off one of the following "F" words:

Flower
or
Face
or
Fowl

Have fun and Draw!

Yes, I understand that you won't "finish" this in 15 minutes, but it gives you an excellent start for a future daily sketchbook page!

Also, since tomorrow is the spirit rally and the last day of the grading period and Friday and all of that and so much more you may choose to not do the daily sketchbook and I will not penalize you for it so you can say thank you and smile and be happier than usual because you are awesome and you like to make my life happy too :)

Daily Sketchbook 3/7

German Expressionism.

We have looked at a little of this art through our artist of the month series in the past (remember Kirchner, for example), but I want you to follow THIS LINK and choose one of the first 20 or so images that comes up and then follow the below steps.

1) look up this prompt on the ipad if you have not already begun to do so (no phones today)
2) enlarge your chosen image as much as possible
3) save it to the photos of the ipad
4) go way back to the watercolor layer you created on 2/11
5) spend today drawing out the image you have chosen, lightly, in pencil
6) photo your image and upload it to Canvas
7) remember which ipad you are using

Be specific with this, and mark what parts are supposed to be black. We will come back to this image again later this week.

Alternatively, and you can thank Abbi for this, you may create a pencil drawing of a hot air balloon carrying a rooster. This will ultimately be something like a fill-in ink piece so keep that in mind as you draw out your image(s).

Step 2) with your moose drawing from above, combine either

Daily Sketchbook 2/22

Welcome back from your week of NOT school. I hope it was relaxing and productive.
I get to see you three times this last week of Feb. so I thought I would end this month with a set of quotes.

Your task is to make them all visually interesting. Think about layout and typeface and length of time to complete them (remember, 15 min).
You shouldn't just write them as you would write notes in another class, but think about the words and how they use space. You may embellish in any way you want as long as I can still read the final product.
You may also use your "day off" daily sketchbook to finish/finalize your idea so that you don't spend 30 or more minutes of class time working on this (I'm thinking of drawing the quote in class and inking it and/or adding additional elements in this example). I mean, they are all good and though provoking quotes so you might want a good looking final version of them for yourself, right?

Quote of the day:
"Action is the foundational key to all success." - pablo picasso

Daily Sketchbook 2/11

First, watercolors.
Second, mix up a bevy of monochromatic colors in your palette.
Third, make sure they are not very dark (so add a decent amount of water).
Fourth, with your big brush, create a regular series of brush strokes (each one separate from the other(s)) across a single or double page spread.

Make sure to cover the entire space.

Do not put this on top of something else, and please do not draw on top of this until you are asked. This is a precursor to another activity later - which is why we don't want it to be that dark.

Fifth, if you have questions because you don't feel like the directions are clear, please ask.

Daily Sketchbook 2/9

Today's sketchbook will be a little different in that you will need to draw, yes, but you will also have to bust out some tech skills. If you don't know how to put two photos together in to one, ask one of your peers. The apps you need are all there on the ipads, so this should be pretty easy, but it's a basic editing piece of knowledge that will be good for you to have.

Step 1: Go back to your artist of the month worksheet of Francesco Clemente and take a photo just of the art you were to have drawn from his painting of Alba.

Step 2: Using the below photo, continue working on that drawing and make it as good/accurate as you can for the next 15 minutes.

Step 3: After perfection, take a second photo of just the drawing of the art.

Step 4: Use an app such as Procreate or PicStitch or Layout to put your two photos together in to one image.
This should allow me to see a BEFORE and an AFTER.

Upload that final photo as your daily sketchbook.
Cheers!

Daily Sketchbook 2/5

I love instagram, but you probably already knew that. While I don't post as many pictures of class/work as I used to, I'm still using it on the daily and finding awesome things all the time.
Your task for the day is to choose one of the below photographs as your inspiration and point of beginning/departure.
Have fun!

It's a Mindful Moment kind of day. I will start us once the desks are clear and the room is silent. Thank you for expediting this process.

Daily Sketchbook 1/28

Today you have, basically, the same directions as on Tuesday. Go to he same place in the library and continue on your drawing. Make it more accurate and more detailed while drawing for the same amount of time and being back within the same amount of time.
Again I will be looking for quantity and quality.
Have fun. Go.

Daily Sketchbook 1/26

Lets continue that whole drawing from observation thing from last week. Your task is this, QUICKLY walk to the library and position yourself at a table away from a computer. Begin drawing your environment.
Are there people there? Are there tables? Are there bookshelves or the circulation desk?
Draw all of that. Be as specific as you can. But make sure to block in a full composition before you worry about details.
Set your timer and draw for 14 minutes. I will be looking for how productive you are.
You should have his read, get to the library, draw, and be back within 22 minutes of the bell ringing. Some of you are great about getting started right away, but some of you are still challenged with your efficiency. Go!
